From Navy Service to Serving Seniors in Bergen County

When Douglas Feltman launched Home Helpers Home Care in Bergen County, it wasn’t just a business move — it was personal.

Doug’s journey to becoming one of North Jersey’s most respected in-home care providers started far from Fort Lee. Born in Paterson, raised in Pennsylvania, and later a Naval officer with the elite Underwater Demolition Team, Doug has worn many hats over the years: CPA, cable television entrepreneur, Portuguese food importer, and even marathoner. But it wasn’t until a deeply personal experience caring for his aging parents that Doug found his true calling.

After relocating his parents to New Jersey to help manage their care more directly, Doug saw firsthand how vital compassionate, reliable support can be — not just for seniors, but for families. That experience became the foundation for Home Helpers of Bergen County, which he opened more than 15 years ago.

“It was the first job I’ve had where I could directly see how lives were improving. That was powerful — and still is.”

Today, Home Helpers supports seniors, individuals with chronic conditions, and those recovering from illness or surgery, helping them remain independent in their own homes. But Doug is quick to credit his long-time staff and caregivers for the organization’s success. Many of them have been with him for a decade or more — a testament to the supportive, mission-driven culture he’s built.

    A Community-First Approach

Doug didn’t know a soul in Bergen County when he launched the business. But he joined the Fort Lee Regional Chamber of Commerce and threw himself into service — eventually becoming Chamber President from 2015 to 2017.

Through networking, relationship-building, and a lot of listening, Doug established the trust that has helped grow his business — and his impact. Today, he's also a proud Rotarian, a board member of the New York Road Runners, and the current President of the Sherman Chamber Ensemble, a music group close to his heart.

His next big civic passion? Leading the effort to build a major new park in Fort Lee — one more way Doug is giving back to the community that embraced him.

    About Home Helpers® Home Care

While Doug doesn’t always lead with the sales pitch, his work speaks volumes. Home Helpers provides individualized care plans for clients and families — from personal care and companionship to specialized support for Alzheimer’s and other conditions. It’s care that adapts to each stage of life, with a strong emphasis on dignity, safety, and continuity.

But ask Doug what keeps him going after a lifetime of varied careers, and he won’t talk business. He’ll talk about people.

“Seeing progress in someone who’s been struggling — watching a family finally feel peace — there’s nothing better than that.”
